Whakatane, March 20 NZPA - The Government has appointed Wira Gardiner to act as a Treaty settlement facilitator to work with Tuhoe.

Part of the job will be to find a way forward to divisions within Tuhoi.

Te Kotahi a Tuhoe has a crown mandate to conduct iwi negotiations but a breakaway group Te Umutaoroa wants to withdraw up to 15 of Tuhoe's 33 claims and negotiate them separately.

Mr Gardiner acted as crown facilitator under the Labour government during negotiations for the "Treelords" deal with a collective of North Island iwi.

He is meeting the two Tuhoe parties separately and then wants to bring them together for talks.

"Te Kotahi a Tuhoe and Te Umutaoroa needed to talk to each other and agree how to restore their relationship," he said.

"There are some major issues but one has to be optimistic about these things. I will be reinforcing the good things and starting with the common objectives."
