Wellington, Aug 11 NZPA - The conviction of Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi will further alienate the Burmese military government from the international community, Foreign Minister Murray McCully said today. A court found democracy leader Suu Kyi guilty today of violating her house arrest by allowing an uninvited American to stay at her home. She was ordered her to serve out an 18-month sentence under house arrest. "It is difficult to reach any conclusion other than that the Burmese government orchestrated this verdict to ensure that Aung San Suu Kyi would still be in detention and therefore unable to participate in planned elections next year," Mr McCully said.

"It is difficult to see any other outcome to today's verdict than further international isolation for Burma."

He called on Burma's rulers to release Suu Kyi immediately and take steps to restore democracy.

She has been in detention for 14 of the last 20 years, mostly under house arrest.
