Wellington, May 4 NZPA - ACT MP Sir Roger Douglas says he's not surprised National has decided not to support his bill to get rid of tariffs on imports, and has labelled the party "economically illiterate".

Sir Roger's Tariff Act 1988 Repeal Bill would allow imports without the payment of tariffs as prescribed in the 1988 Act, but Acting Prime Minister Bill English said the Government's position on tariffs was to "gradually wind down" what was left of them.

"We're not planning to change that position," he told reporters today.

Sir Roger said that stance was "no surprise whatsoever".

"It just demonstrates, once again, how economically illiterate they really are," Sir Roger said.

The bill was drawn from the ballot on April 22.
