Wellington, March 25 NZPA - Meridian Energy director David Shand is not being reappointed to the role.

Several Labour government-appointed state board directors are not being reappointed by the new National Government when their terms expire .

Mr Shand confirmed to The Dominion Post newspaper that State-Owned Enterprises Minister Simon Power had written to him to say he would not be reappointed when his first term expired on April 30.

"I am disappointed," Mr Shand said. "I can only presume it was because of my Labour Party background."

Mr Shand was a Labour candidate for Wellington Central in the 1970s. He is Labour-appointed chair of the Tertiary Education Commission, where his term has 18 months to run.

He has worked at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund.

Another Meridian director with links to Labour, Polly Shaverian, was removed from the board before her term expired.

Accountant Catherine Drayton, whose term also ends on April 30, was reappointed.
