Wellington, Nov 25 NZPA - Health Minister Tony Ryall is trumpeting record levels of elective surgery being performed this year.
"Two thousand more patients received elective surgery in the three months to September 2009 compared to the same period in 2008. That is an increase of over 6 percent -- from 32,300 to 34,300 operations for the September quarter," Mr Ryall said.
The Government had aimed when taking power last year to increase the number of elective operations by 4000 a year and in the year ended June there had been an increase of 12,000.
Mr Ryall said the ongoing increases in elective surgery was a great achievement because it had been done despite the impact of swine flu, and with no significant change in the complexity of those operations.
