Wellington, Oct 16 NZPA - AgResearch will work with eight other research organisations to provide the new Centre for Agriculture Greenhouse Gas Research, Agriculture Minister David Carter says.
The centre was established under the Government's Primary Growth Partnership initiative and will receive $5 million a year for the next 10 years.
It will focus on reducing emissions and improving efficiency and productivity on farms, Mr Carter said.
"It is clear that agriculture will be part of New Zealand's emissions reduction efforts, but the sector must have access to effective and affordable technologies that do not compromise productivity," he said.
The other research partners were Pastoral Greenhouse Gas Research Consortium, DairyNZ, Lincoln and Massey Universities, and crown research institutes Landcare Research, Niwa, Plant and Food Research and Scion.
