Wellington, April 28 NZPA - Labour MP Jacinda Ardern has drafted a private member's bill to protect conservation land from mining.

The bill is in reaction to a recent government proposal to remove areas of conservation land from Schedule 4 of the Crown Minerals Act in order to ascertain the mineral value of the land.

Ms Ardern's bill would require Parliament to approve the removal of land from the protection of Schedule 4.

Currently, the Conservation Minister can remove land.

It is Ms Ardern's first member's bill. It will have to be drawn out of the ballot before it is introduced to the House.
