Wellington, July 9 NZPA - The Government has redesigned its solar energy grants scheme to include heat pump water heaters.

Energy Minister Gerry Brownlee said today under the new scheme grants of $500 or $1000 would be given for solar water heating systems that saved the most energy, with the amount depending on performance rating.

The grants would also be available for heat pump water heaters, which were another efficient way to heat water, he said.

The new programme would build on work to date with the solar industry to further improve standards for product quality and installation.

"Water heating makes up around 30 percent of the average household's energy use, so investments in greater energy efficiency can really help reduce ongoing energy bills," Mr Brownlee said.

The new programme will come into effect for solar water heating on September 1, when it will replace the current programme which ends on August 31.

Grants for heat pump water heaters are expected to be in place before the end of the year.
