Wellington, Aug 2 NZPA - New National Party president Peter Goodfellow wants to build on the "fantastic" work of his predecessor to ensure the party is in a strong position going into the next election.

Speaking on TVNZ's Q+A programme shortly after his election as president, the Auckland businessman said he wanted to use his lengthy association with National and his commercial skills to "ensure that we go into 2011 with a good headstart."

Mr Goodfellow said he saw his role as that of supporting "a highly successful and popular prime minister" and to ensure that the board and the party was "right behind him".

He paid tribute to his predecessor, Judy Kirk, who had "done a fantastic job" in building National Party membership and ensuring there was sufficient funding to fight the last election campaign.

He wanted to continue the focus on building membership and support.

"And we want to ensure that we have very active policy people in the party who get to be heard and have some influence over the Cabinet."
