Wellington, June 25 NZPA - ACT MP David Garrett has apologised for suggesting lewd comments he made to a woman staff member in Parliament would have been acceptable in Tonga.
The first term MP was reprimanded by ACT leader Rodney Hide for making the remarks and he apologised to the staff member.
But he caused more trouble for himself while he was explaining his plight on TV One's Q&A programme on Sunday.
"I now understand very clearly that the kind of thing that might have been okay in a law firm in Tonga is not okay in Parliament," he said.
Mr Garrett is a lawyer and has a law firm in Tonga, where he used to work.
The Tongan Law Society was incensed by the remark and was considering laying disciplinary charges against him.
TV One reported tonight Mr Garrett sent a written apology to the society, which was accepted.
