Wellington, June 14 NZPA - Men's Health Week was officially launched today by Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne.

There were "simple and tangible" men could do to manage stress and maintain their well-being, Mr Dunne said in his opening address at Parliament this morning.

"At the most basic level these include making sure we look after ourselves by eating healthily, getting enough sleep and exercise. It is simple, basic stuff, but it helps and it works."

Men must look after themselves for themselves and their families and friends, Mr Dunne said.

Sir Peter Leitch, aka the Mad Butcher, had battled bladder cancer and his willingness to discuss it publicly would encourage other men to go to the doctor, he said.

Former All Black John Kirwan had publicly talked about depression and "deserves a knighthood", Mr Dunne said.

"Both men -- these truly giant and giving men in our society -- have one simple message - if you need help, get it. You're worth it. Men are worth it."
