Wellington, April 29 NZPA - Defence Minister Wayne Mapp today held talks with the United States vice chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, General James Cartwright.
Dr Mapp said there was a general discussion about the Asia-Pacific region and the situation in Afghanistan.
"It was essentially part and parcel of the progressive improvement in the relationship, an increased level of dialogue and a greater level of engagement," he told NZPA.
Gen Cartwright is in New Zealand meeting his Defence Force counterparts.
"Our two countries are working cooperatively on a broad range of issues of mutual interest, and both governments are committed to expanding and enhancing that cooperation where it works to do so," he said in a statement when he arrived.
