Wellington, Dec 21 NZPA - Law changes planned for next year will speed up court procedures, Justice Minister Simon Power says.
Mr Power today released the framework of a Criminal Procedure Bill, seeking public input before final drafting.
"It's estimated that the reforms we're proposing have the potential to save thousands of court events and court sitting hours," he said.
"This will lead to cases progressing through the system much more quickly, resulting in a more efficient system that delivers justice to victims, witnesses, defendants and the community."
Mr Power is working on a comprehensive overhaul of the justice system and Parliament has already passed legislation allowing advanced technology to be used for audio visual appearances.
"The criminal procedure simplification project is a substantial piece of work and I'm confident its reforms will be effective," he said.
"This consultation is another milestone."
