Wellington, July 21 NZPA - Labour says reports that more than 1300 people signed up for the dole last week show how quickly unemployment is growing.

"In late June there was a net increase of 1100 people signing up to the dole each week," social development spokeswoman Annette King said.

"The number subsequently grew to 1200 and TV3 reported tonight it had gone up again last week with 1342 people signing up."

Ms King revealed last week that by the end of June an additional 52,000 people had signed on for benefits, meaning there were now more than 310,000 relying on the government for their income.

Labour said yesterday it was changing its policies and would soon release a recession response package to help people get off the dole, into training and back into work.
