Labour MP Mahara Okeroa is holding a 10-point lead over his Maori Party rival in the Te Tai Tonga electorate, an poll released last night shows.
Mr Okeroa rated 49 percent support against 39 percent for the Maori Party's Tahui Katene in the Maori TV poll, but nearly a quarter of the 500 voters questioned said they had not made up their minds.
In the party vote, Labour held a clear lead over the Maori Party with 45 percent against 25 percent. National was the third preferred party on 17 percent.
The poll means Mr Okeroa is doing a lot better than his two Labour colleagues who hold Maori seats.
Although they have much higher profiles, Maori Affairs Minister Parekura Horomia and Nanaia Mahuta are fighting close battles in Ikaroa-Rawhiti and Hauraki-Waikato.
Mr Horomia is up against veteran broadcaster and activist Derek Fox while Ms Mahuta's challenger is Angeline Greensill.
