Wellington, Aug 5 NZPA - A new scholarship initiative announced today will provide opportunities for 250 students from low socioeconomic families to attend independent secondary schools.

ACT Party associate education minister Heather Roy said $2.6 million of an extra $10m allocated in this year's budget for private school funding would be used to provide for the scholarships.

"Next year 150 students from low-income families will be able to go to an independent secondary school, increasing to 200 students in 2011 and 250 in 2012." The scholarships would cover fees and provide an allowance for uniforms and other school-related costs.
