Wellington, Jan 13 NZPA - Revenue Minister Peter Dunne says the new payroll giving scheme is off to a good start and has the potential to make a big difference to donations to charities.

The scheme, promoted by Mr Dunne's United Future Party, came into effect on January 7.

Employers are now able to deduct donations from workers' pay, with the donor getting an immediate tax credit instead of having to wait until the end of the tax year to claim it. The money is sent direct to the chosen charity.

Mr Dunne said today the scheme had been welcomed by a number of organisations and was being promoted within the public service.

"It's early days yet but it's most gratifying to see a very positive response from many quarters," he said.

"I think this scheme has the potential to make a real difference...this really is a vehicle that makes generosity and kindness practical and simple to apply."
