Wellington, May 15 NZPA - Grant Kirby, former chairman of the One Auckland Trust -- which campaigned to combine Auckland's councils -- has been appointed to the Local Government Commission.

Local Government Minister Rodney Hide announced the appointment today.

Mr Hide also said he had "invited" the commission's chairwoman Sue Piper to appoint Mr Kirby as the liaison person between the commission and the Auckland Transition Agency (ATA).

The ATA is the subject of a bill currently being debated by Parliament which opposition MPs say is being pushed through undemocratically.

They have used a number of filibustering tactics to delay progress, with the most effective being the putting up hundreds of amendments and forcing votes on each one of them.

Mr Hide said Mr Kirby had "considerable experience" in local government.

He was a former chairman of the Local Government Commission, ran a consulting business and held a number of senior positions in Auckland's local government, Mr Hide said.
