Wellington, July 14 NZPA - Businesses will receive discounts on their ACC levies to provide stronger incentives to improve workplace safety, ACC Minister Nick Smith announced today.

The proposal, to be introduced on April 1 next year, will allow employers who pay more than $10,000 a year in levies, to receive discounts of up to 50 percent based on their claims history.

It will affect about 5000 businesses which employ more than 30 people, and involves about 690,000 workers, or more than 30 percent of the workforce.

Smaller employers will receive a 10 percent no-claim bonus on their levies if no weekly compensation claim have been lodged in the past three years.

Penalties will apply to smaller employers where there are more than four weekly compensation claims in the past three years.

An estimated 220,000 small businesses would receive a discount, and about 1000 would pay a high-claim penalty.
