Television New Zealand says its first leaders debate was a big ratings hit with more than a million people tuning in.

Labour leader Helen Clark and National leader John Key squared off in the first formal match-off of the election campaign.

TVNZ put part of the debate's success down to its form, which allowed people to prerecord questions through Internet site YouTube. A selection were then put to the leaders.

There are two more main party leaders debates during the campaign with TV3 holding one on November 3 and TVNZ holding another debate on November 5.
