Wellington, Sept 23 NZPA - MP Peter Dunne's proposed timetable for New Zealand to become a republic is set out in a book he launched tonight.
The United Future leader has previously explained it could take only five years and the New Zealand Republican Handbook explains how.
He is proposing a three-stage process:
* A binding referendum as early as next year on whether New Zealanders want to have their own head of state;
* If they say yes, a further binding referendum in 2012 on whether the head of state should be elected or appointed and the confirm the powers of the head of state; and
* Transition to a republic could occur during the Parliamentary term beginning in 2014.
Mr Dunne said the timetable was "realistic and achievable" and allowed maximum public involvement.
