Wellington, July 14 NZPA - The expulsion of Australia's acting high commissioner from Suva will further isolate Fiji from the international community, says Britain's Foreign Minister.

Sarah Roberts was ordered to leave yesterday after Fiji's self-appointed Prime Minister Voreqe (Frank) Bainimarama accused Australia and New Zealand of trying to stymie a regional summit which was to have been held in Fiji.

The Fijian government said Ms Roberts' expulsion was a direct result of "interfering with the internal affairs of Fiji and conducting unfriendly acts".

Britain's Foreign Minister Jeremy Browne said today he was extremely disappointed that Ms Roberts had been expelled.

"The UK government believes this action will increase further Fiji's isolation from the international community.

"The expulsion will hamper the dialogue that the international community has been calling for in order to assist Fiji in its return to democracy."

Mr Browne said he welcomed Australia's "measured response to this unfortunate situation".

Canberra does not intend to expel Fiji's sole diplomat in Australia.
