Wellington May 12 NZPA - Around 240 households in the Mt Albert area will find out today their houses are to be demolished to make way for Waterview Connection that will complete Auckland's Western Ring Route, Transport Minister Steven Joyce says.

The Government has told the Transport Agency to decide between three routes costing between $1 billion and $1.4 billion.

The agency's board will meet today to decide and immediately get in touch with affected households, before the public announcement tomorrow.

Mr Joyce said the previous Government's preference for a tunnel affecting fewer households was too expensive, at between $2.7b and $3.1b.

Cabinet had ruled out stumping up more money for that yesterday, saying it was unaffordable.

Mr Joyce said the path of the three different routes were different, but they all broadly followed the current Waterview alignment.

The 240 households that would be notified did not include those properties already purchased by the agency.

Mr Joyce said other commercial properties and rail land reserved would also have to be demolished.

Mr Joyce said the fact there was a by-election in the area had not been taken into account in the decision, which had to be taken in the interests of the country.
