Wellington, March 2 NZPA - Cabinet will soon discuss law changes to strengthen penalties for assaulting police officers, Police Minister Judith Collins says.

Ms Collins has received a report on assaults against officer and, with Justice Minister Simon Power, is working on the proposed law changes.

She said today on Radio New Zealand legislative changes to the Sentencing Act and the Crimes Act would be needed, and would be taken through Parliament in the usual way.

Ms Collins, and Prime Minister John Key, said last week one change could be to make assaulting a police officer an aggravating factor in sentencing. At present is can be applied at a judge's discretion.

The Government decided to strengthen penalties after a recent spate of assaults on police, including one in which an officer had his lip bitten off.
