Wellington, March 23 NZPA - The Royal Commission on Auckland Governance will be released tomorrow, Local Government Minister Rodney Hide said today.

The commissioners, Peter Salmon, Margaret Bazley and David Shand briefed Mr Hide yesterday and will attend a press conference tomorrow afternoon in Auckland.

"The Royal Commission's report is a series of comprehensive documents, the first of which is 800 pages long," Mr Hide said.

"I have begun working with Prime Minister John Key, other ministers and officials as a matter of priority to assess the commission's recommendations and look forward to presenting the Government's response in the near future."

The inquiry was set up by the previous government and has been considering local body arrangements for the city.

There has been speculation it will recommend a "super council" for the wider region, setting up a contest for Lord Mayor of Auckland.
