American to receive honorary ONZM from Prime Minister

Wellington, April 13 NZPA - Prime Minister John Key will present the president of the United States New Zealand Council John Mullen with an honorary Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit in Washington DC today.

Mr Mullen has been on the council board since 2001, and president since 2004.

Council chairman and former Prime Minister Jim Bolger said Mr Mullen was an "outstanding American and a good and loyal friend of New Zealand".

"John Mullen has led the US NZ Council at a time when extraordinary steps have been taken to strengthen the relationship between New Zealand and the United States.

"We New Zealanders can be grateful that we have friends in Washington like John Mullen."

Mr Key was in Washington attending the nuclear proliferation summit being held there.
