ACT Leader David Seymour is urging councillors to make their positions on rezoning plans clear after tomorrow’s extraordinary Council meeting.

"Reports are that Councillors are receiving veiled threats from officers to keep them quiet are an affront to local democracy," said Mr Seymour.

"Having been pushed back hard in 2013, it seems that unelected elements in the Auckland Council have come back for another bite at changing the character of Auckland communities. This grind-em-down strategy is unacceptable.

"Worse than that are reports that elected representatives are being bullied. Councillors in the Epsom electorate have told me they feel they are being blindsided by officials. If true, that is also unacceptable - they are elected to represent the people, not the civil service.

"I would urge my parliamentary colleagues, especially Housing Minister Nick Smith to be mindful of residents' wishes and proper democratic process.

"After tomorrow’s meeting, councillors should have had more than enough time to form a view on the out-of-scope rezoning. They owe it to residents to make their voting intentions clear, so they can stand up and be counted."
