Labour welcomes the shift in emphasis signalled by the decision to transfer the Retirement Commissioner from the Social Development portfolio to the Commerce portfolio, says Labour's Commerce spokesperson Lianne Dalziel.

"One of the functions of the Retirement Commissioner includes ' the promotion of education about retirement income issues', a function which is not limited to questions about NZ superannuation," Lianne Dalziel said.

"This announcement has the potential to draw together all the different groups that are involved in educating all age groups from school children through to people who are already retired.

"During our time in government we worked hard to strengthen the regulatory infrastructure to improve investor confidence, increase market participation, and strengthen our international profile as we aligned our laws with international best practice. Financial literacy was an important part of the mix including most importantly its inclusion in the school curriculum. Bringing this work into the heart of the Commerce portfolio will help even further.

"As I have said on several occasions there is only so much that a government can do to eliminate risk, because if we could and if we did, we would have no entrepreneurship, no investment, no innovation and no growth to ignite our transformational ambitions for New Zealand.
