Wellington, Dec 30 NZPA - Setting a financial goal as a New Year's resolution will put you in charge of your money and your life, the Retirement Commission says.

Retirement Commissioner Diana Crossan said many people faced financial challenges this year, and will be thinking about what they learnt about managing their money, and how to put the lessons into practise in 2010.

Financial goals could include reducing your credit card balance, saving or paying off a mortgage.

The organisation's financial information website Sorted is sharing tips from well-known New Zealanders on how to make and keep resolutions.

World champion rower Eric Murray suggested making a budget, and ensuring there was a little money to "splash about so you can enjoy yourself".

Radio host Kerre Woodham recommended starting saving, with even $10 a week adding up over time.
