E tū says contracting company, Spotless has a payroll office in disarray, as pay problems continue to dog its members.

E tū dubbed Spotless the "Novopay" of the cleaning industry after hundreds of complaints of underpayment; incorrect holiday pay; no pay at all in some cases, as well as workers not receiving pay slips.

E tū industry co-ordinator, Jill Ovens says "problems still abound", with the Mangere Law Centre also fielding complaints about pay mistakes.

A worker at Mangere’s Southern Cross school campus says "pay packets are consistently underpaid", despite Spotless promising last month to resolve matters within days.

"One person… he only got $87.00 for the 34 hours he worked. He’s got two kids and a car to pay off.

"One lady, she only got $55.00 for 20 hours work. It’s happened to everybody, and every week."

He says last week, he couldn’t clock in using the company’s voice recognition system - a common problem which consistently causes underpayments.

Jill Ovens says the union meets with Spotless again tomorrow, to try to resolve the issues at the school.

She says the union is also owed around $13,000 in union fees that have been deducted from members’ pay but have not been submitted to the union.

"Our membership staff are dealing with just one person in Australia who is struggling to deal with the complexities of our members’ pay after the New Zealand payroll people all left.

"It’s unacceptable. We have over a thousand members on their payroll so potentially those people and many more could be affected", Ms Ovens said.
