Reefton Returned and Services Association has taken top honours for Buller District at the West Coast’s biggest annual celebration of volunteers, the Trustpower Community Awards.

Voluntary groups from Buller, Grey and Westland Districts, together with representatives from Trustpower, Buller, Grey and Westland District Councils, and the community, gathered at Greymouth’s Regent Theatre to hear how 24 groups and 10 young people are making an impact in their community.

Trustpower Community and Communications Advisor Abbie Siely says Reefton Returned and Services Association stood out to the judges for demonstrating initiative, creativity and a wide community reach.

"Reefton RSA provides welfare and support not only to current and ex-service personnel, but its wider community as a whole. In addition to ANZAC and Armistice Day commemorations, the RSA has actively worked to develop a community-wide appreciation of our armed services and the veterans who have served our country.

"The group held the West Coast’s first commemoration for the 28th Maori Battalion and has connected with local Iwi by creating a position for a Kaumatua on its committee. Reefton RSA set up the West Coast Local Hero Remembrance Initiative, showcasing local veterans on takeaway coffee cups distributed by their local café."

Miss Siely said that the group was invested not only in the welfare of service men and women, but anyone in the community in need of assistance.

"Beyond its commitment to our service men and women, Reefton RSA has facilitated an incredible $40,000 into its community to assist people living in hardship. The group has paid for several local young people to attend Outward Bound, Spirit of Adventure, and progress their leadership and personal development."

For winning the Supreme Award, Reefton Returned and Services Association received a framed certificate, a trophy, and $2,000 prize money.

The group will go on to represent Buller at the 2018 Trustpower National Community Awards, when volunteers from 26 regions from around New Zealand gather in Tauranga next March.
