Vodafone cans Talk

Wellington, May 21 NZPA - Mobile phone operator Vodafone has canned its contentious Talk plan in the wake of concerns put to the Commerce Commission.

Launched last month, Talk offered customers 200 minutes calling on the Vodafone network and to landlines for $12 a month, but Vodafone spokesman Paul Brislen told The New Zealand Herald the plan was pulled because of the commission's view.

Communications and IT Minister Steven Joyce asked that the commission review Talk in light of its recommendation he accept commercial mobile termination rate offers from Vodafone and Telecom.

The commission's new view was that the new plan made it more difficult for new entrants to the mobile phone market.

Termination rates are what mobile phone companies charge each other for taking calls or texts from other networks.
