Wellington, June 21 NZPA - Telecom New Zealand said Sue Sheldon has been appointed as an independent director with effect from today.

"New Zealand Shareholders' Association (NZSA) proposed to us that we consider Sue Sheldon, and we thought Sue would bring a range of additional skills that would complement the board at this time of exceptional change for Telecom. We thank the NZSA for its valuable contribution," chairman Wayne Boyd said.

Ms Sheldon is based in Christchurch and also sits on the boards of Freightways, Contact Energy and the Reserve Bank of New Zealand.

She is a former president of the New Zealand Institute of Chartered Accountants and was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in the Queen's Birthday Honours List in 2007 for services to business.
