Wellington, Aug 8 NZPA - The Commerce Commission believes there may be reasonable grounds for an investigation into mobile termination -- the fees mobile phone companies charge other carriers to terminate calls on their networks.
The commission today released an issues paper on mobile termination, which enables mobile phone users to receive calls from different phone networks.
The paper is part of a process the commission is going through to decide if it should investigate whether mobile termination should be regulated.
In May, the commission sought the views of interested parties about such a move, and in the issues paper published today said it now considered there appeared to be reasonable grounds to start an investigation into mobile termination.
It was testing the issue further by releasing the issues paper and calling for submissions.
Mobile termination charges were a significant contributor to the retail prices of mobile charges, the commission said.
