Board Changes At Southern Cross Medical

Wellington, Sept 17 NZPA - Southern Cross Healthcare group has named two new board members and a new chairman of its hospitals unit.

The medical insurer said Graeme Hawkins and Mark Verbiest are joining the Southern Cross Medical Care Society board.

Mr Hawkins is chairman of Watercare Services and was an independent director of Fonterra until 2007. Mr Verbiest was group general counsel at Telecom until June this year.

Harley Gray, an orthopaedic surgeon, was named as chairman of Southern Cross Hospitals Ltd, replacing Jeff Todd.

Mr Todd continues as chairman of Southern Cross Medical Care Society.

The society this week reported a surplus of $7.83 million in the year to June 30, down from $48.01 million in the same period last year.

It has 834,967 members while 1.4 million New Zealanders have private health insurance. NZPA WGT pjg nb
